Word work: syllables

Breaking words into syllables helps us to read and spell them. • Two syllables: crick/et watch/ing • Three syllables: com/pu/ter in/vi/ted Some words have only one syllable: week, match

1 Look at Uncle Kevin’s email on page 73. Find:

• two words with one syllable. • two words with two syllables. • two words with three syllables.

2 Add three more words of your own to each list. • Words with one syllable: girl …. • Words with two syllables: ticket …. • Words with three syllables: Barbados …. Writing: write an email 1 Prepare the text of an email to send to a member of your family. Invite this person to visit you. Remember to: • greet this person at the beginning of your email. • invite him or her to visit you and give details, e.g. date and time. • say what you will do. • send your best wishes and write your name. 2 Revise the text of your email. Show it to another student. Ask him or her to check: • you have included all the necessary information. • you have written the information clearly.

Send an email inviting a friend to visit you.

• Syllables: Before students work on Exercises 1–2, brainstorm words with different numbers of syllables. Say these words aloud, breaking them up into syllables for students to count. ICT Writing an email: Discuss suitable greetings, e.g. Hi!, Hello! • Remind students that they must use correct grammar and spelling in emails.
