Fact and opinion
A fact is a piece of information which is true. Contains no artificial ingredients. An opinion is something we think is true. Our ice creams are really tasty.

1 Find one fact and one opinion in the advertisements on page 81. 2 Which of these statements are facts? Which are opinions? 1 The shop sells bread, cookies and cakes.

5 “Coconut Beach Hotel” is 1 km from the airport. 6 “Coconut Beach” is the best hotel in the Caribbean.
Speaking and listening 1 Look at the texts on page 81 again. Discuss these questions.
• Who would buy Mama’s ice cream? • Who would buy Krunchy Flakes? • Who would buy Tropical Taste Mango Juice? 2 Which text do you think is the most attractive? Why?

It has a good slogan.
3 Think of three other things people buy, e.g. bread. Invent slogans for them.
• Fact and opinion: To help students distinguish between fact and opinion, model sentences giving facts and opinions about familiar subjects, e.g. Mangoes are juicy. They are my favourite fruit . • Speaking and listening: Exercise 3, students can share their slogans with the class. Discuss which ones are most effective.
