1 Every day people throw away things they do not need. Paper, plastic and cans take a long time to decay . Did you know that it can take 100
years for plastic bags to rot away? Rates of decay for household waste
Batteries: 100 years
Tin cans: 50 years
Plastic bags: up to 100 years
Plastic bottles: up to 1,000 years
Fruit and vegetable peel: up to 1 year
Glass jars: more than 2,000 years
Newspaper: 6 months
What happens to waste? 2 Waste collectors remove waste from our homes and take it to dumps outside towns and villages. People throw away so much waste that these dumps are getting bigger and bigger.
• Reading: Tell students to survey the text by looking at the layout, pictures and headings. Ask: What kind of text is it – fact or fiction? What kind of information does it contain? • They can predict the time it takes for everyday items to rot away, then check their predictions.
