We hope that all of you had nice end to your Summer in the Tri-State area—a summer and year filled with starts and stops . A year littered with a clear sense of optimism and some setbacks to say the least, 2021 is our second year “at home”. October arrives with our yearning for a more normal Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Holiday Season that we can share with friends and family and start to shake off the interruptions that COVID has brought into our lives. But one thing is certain, this pandemic has heightened the importance of the time we spend in our homes. Remodeling and new construction have continued at a pace in New Jersey and New York that hasn’t been seen before. Projects have been a challenge with the rise and fluctuation in pricing for raw materials, finished goods and availability in general. Delays and backlogs still exist on many products, but manufacturers are still producing at levels above production from previous years. Demand still continues to outpace even increased capacity, but our company has continued to make an investment in inventory to shield our customers from as many interruptions as possible, especially on the decorative end. We have not succeeded at every turn, but we are putting our efforts into making it easier for our design consultants and our customers. On this issue’s pages, we are featuring products to help keep your home sustainable and clean (GPS page 20). Mick de Guilio introduces his Kallista Juxtapose line (Kohler page 14) and we get a chance to guide you through a 2021 brownstone design that will make even the chicest city dwellers’ head turns (GPS page 36). November will be an exciting month for GPS as we introduce our third Kohler Signature Store and our first in New York as we open our doors on Long Island’s North Shore in Manhasset (Kohler page 12). One of my favorite sections in this issue is (City Guide located on GPS page 24) which features history and some of the hot spots in Bayonne, NJ, home of our original location. GPS was founded in 1910 by our Great Grandfather Charles S. Goldberg. Also, the hometown of our Grandfather, Herb Tucker and Uncle (Bruce Tucker, CEO), Bayonne has been the fertile soil from which our company has grown. We have put together a beautiful collection of stories and inspiring images in this issue. Thank you for reading and if there is anything that we can help you with on a project large or small, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
With its name inspired by an elegantly lengthened C-shaped spout form, Cia stands out from the linear, horizontal designs featured in most modern faucets. The spout’s contemporary curves and the handle’s defined edges combine with elegant details for a look that feels classic yet fresh. The collection also introduces Moen’s first one-handle lavatory faucet with single-sensor touchless activation featuring MotionSense Wave technology, allowing users to turn water on and off with the simple pass of a hand.

PENINSULA LIFE Bayonne is a city with great restaurants, a midcentury feel, and a unique history
I n the 1600’s, Henry Hudson sailed past the peninsula now known as Bayonne and claimed it for The Neth- erlands, naming it Bergen Neck after the settlement of Bergen (now Jersey City). Once occupied by the Lenni Lenape tribe, the area eventually fell under British rule, and during the American Revolution, a battle was fought at Fort Delancey at the Southern tip of Bayonne. In 1836, the Morris Canal was completed, creating a trade route to Northern New Jersey. The streets of this diverse city of 62,000 res- idents are lined with one and two-family homes, small businesses, and churches. The city also boasts beatiful waterfront parks and a wide assortment of eateries. While shopping at GPS, make some extra time to explore this urban enclave. ■ T E X T DEBORAH L. MARTIN

What inspires you? Just coming to work inspires me. I like seeing customers faces light up when their project starts coming together. Of all the design projects you’ve worked on, what’s your favorite? It’s hard to pick just one. Is there a TV show or movie with design that you love? House Hunters. I love seeing what people do to their homes. If you were a color, what color would you be—and why? I would be blue. Blue is the color of trust, responsibility and relaxation. What type of design project do you find yourself working on most, and what would you like to do more of? The projects I work on most are remodeling kitchens and baths. I would like to do more new construction projects. Who inspires you? My family. My grandfather has really shaped me into the person I am today and showed me the importance of family. Amongst many other success- es, being a role model for my little cousins, nieces and nephew is what makes him proud, and that is what inspires me. Can you describe a favorite design project you’ve worked on? One of my favorite design projects was a sandy rebuild in Sea Bright. I designed every bathroom in the house, each one having a really cool, updated look with brushed gold and matte black fixtures. In the master, we went with a DTV+ system from Kohler, allowing the customers to have full control of their shower right from their smartphones. If you were a color, what color would you be—and why? Black. It is associated with strength, authority and power. It symbolizes prestige, intelligence and importance.
What type of design project do you find yourself working on most? By far the most common design proj- ect is the renovation of master bath- rooms. Being that clients are home now more than ever, many are looking to create a more luxurious, relaxing, and spa-like space in their homes. How do you unwind when you’re feeling stressed out? I love to play golf. Arnold Palmer said, “Success in golf depends less on strength of body, more on strength of mind and character.” Is there a design upgrade you’d love to make in your own home? I would love to put a DTV+ system into my shower, to me there is no cooler way to go. What celebrity would you have dinner with and why? I would have dinner with Kobe Bryant.
How would you describe your personal design style? JOEY SAVERINO MATAWAN
He has been an idol to me since a young age. His work ethic and mentality is unmatched across all of sports. It didn’t matter if it was the NBA Finals or a game of checkers, he wanted to win and I relate very much to that. MEET THE DESIGNERS
Because I am young, I would say I am more contemporary. I can appreciate all styles but I definitely bring about a fashion forward perspective.
How do you unwind when you’re feeling stressed out? Spending time with my family, dogs and friends at the Jersey shore. Is there a design upgrade you’d love to make in your own home? I would like to remodel my kitchen. Remove some walls for an open floor plan. Can you share a trend or something going on in the world of design that fascinates you? Brushed Gold faucets. One of the most fascinating up-and-coming finishes to hit the market. Designing with Brushed Gold faucets is both refined and classy. What superpower would you like to try out and why? Mind reader. I would love to know what people are thinking when I offer an idea.

T he designers at LC Interiors—Danielle Chase and Lauren Collander—designed this newly-con- structed home for a family that needed more space than their brownstone in Chicago provided. The family’s active lifestyle demanded private and independent spaces like a home office, children’s playroom, and quiet bedrooms. In addition, they wanted a first floor and outdoor garden space that was conducive to entertaining. Coming up with a plan for the décor involved blending two distinct style aesthetics. Lauren Colland- er explains, “Creating a cohesive design for homeowners with very different personal styles was a challenge. The wife is from the South and values architectural details with traditional elements. The husband wanted modern all the way. During our presentations it was fun to see their reactions—a mix of excitement and surprise that we could make them both happy and balance their desires.” The designers also had to make the home kid-friendly, something that they consider to be a specialty of the firm. Chase shares, “Lauren’s first career was designing bou- tique hotels all over the world, and most hotels are design forward, but durable and hold up to the constant use. The knowledge from her past helps create spaces where
parents can be carefree.” She continues, “We want them to be the cool parents who are never saying ‘Don’t touch that!’ and choosing the right materials and furnishings helped create the right solution for them.” The property was narrow so that presented its own design challenge. The designers selected furnishings that can expand as needed, such as the dining table which can be enlarged for gatherings. They used the same chairs in the breakfast area in coordinating colors, so that they could be used in the dining room as well. To add light to the lower level, the mudroom, which is at the back of the home on a split level between the basement and the first floor, has a window that is also visible above the basement bar. It allows natural light to stream down into the basement. Both Collander and Chase say that their favorite part of the home is the dining room. “The aqua cabinets and merlot velvet chairs are a cheerful entry into the home. From the dining room you can see into the butler’s pantry with a fun marble backsplash. Everyone at the table has a great view, each different,” says Chase. The built-in wall was created because more storage was needed. Collander says, “The homeowner loves to cook so we had to dedicate all of the kitchen storage to food prep. This built-in wall holds all the

finer items and provides extra countertop space.” The kitchen island is a place for the couple’s young son to sit while his mom cooks. The breakfast area includes two towers of cabinetry for more storage, and includes a cubbyhole where purse, brief- case, keys, and laptop can be stowed. To create character in this new construction, the clients requested exposed beams. Collander and Chase created a custom stain to match the floors. Other areas of escape in the home in-
clude the luxurious master bath, and the downstairs bar area, which has a more masculine feel, with walnut cabinets and honed, quartzite countertops. The co- hesive color scheme, including neutrals, blues, and greens, “were all mutually agreed upon colors by the homeown- ers. Bold tones allowed the transition- al design to feel contemporary at the same time.” The designers suggested an elegant pop of color. “The merlot chairs were us pushing the envelope, and we’re happy they trusted us.” ■
