Speaking and listening 1 Make up a question about plants. The answer must be in the passage on pages 96–97. 2 Work in a pair. Ask and answer your questions.
Language: joining word ‘and’
We use and to join two sentences: We eat beans. We eat carrots. (two sentences) We eat beans and we eat carrots. (one sentence) You only need one capital letter and one full stop in your new sentence.
1 Which sentence is correct? Look at the capital letters and full stops. 1 a) I like bananas and I like rice. b) I like bananas. and I like rice.

a) Birds eat nuts and seeds. b) Birds eat nuts. And seeds.

a) We grow. Flowers and vegetables. b) We grow flowers and vegetables.
4 a) I like the blue flower and The yellow flower. b) I like the blue flower and the yellow flower.
• Speaking and listening: This exercise practises generating questions from a text read by pupils. To aid comprehension, regularly invite pupils to ask questions based on a text they have read. • Extension: Pupils can go on to generate questions about plants not related to the passage. If they don’t know the answer, ask them how they might find out ( ask parents, ask for help to look in a book or on the internet ). Help them to find the answers if you can.
