Unit 15
2 Use and to join these sentences:
Example: 1 Plants need sun and they need rain.
1 Plants need sun. They need rain. 2 It is hot. It is cloudy. 3 It rained a lot. The bananas grew. 4 I picked a flower. I put it in water. 5 We grew beans. We ate them.
When you join two sentences, sometimes you can leave out some of the words. I like bananas. I like rice. â I like bananas and rice.
3 Join these sentences with and . Make the sentence as short as you can.
Example: 1 Plants need sun and rain.
1 Plants need sun. Plants need rain. 2 It is hot. It is cloudy. 3 That tree has leaves. It has flowers. 4 The bird eats seeds. It eats fruit. 5 We ate nuts. We ate fruit.
• Exercise 3: Demonstrate to pupils that, if two sentences have the same verb, one of the verbs can be left out when you join the sentences with ‘and’. Invite pupils to edit an earlier piece of writing. Can they join some sentences? How else could they improve what they have written? • For more work on joining words, see Workbook 1 pages 71–72.
