Anansi and the Yams: Part 1 One day, Anansi had some yams. Old Turtle said, “Please can I have some yams?” Anansi looked at Old Turtle’s hands.
Anansi said, “You can have yams, but first you must wash your hands.” Old Turtle went to the river and washed his hands.
“Ha ha!” said Anansi. “Now I can eat all the yams.’
Old Turtle came back and there were no yams. He was very angry.
• Listen up! CR Read aloud an Anansi story from from Listening Texts pages 125–126. You may speak. Speak the characters’ words in Creole. Pause regularly to ask pupils to recap what has happened – to check their comprehension. Prompt pupils to say how the characters felt and what they said. • Discuss cause and effect . Give examples e.g.: Cause – you go to bed late. Effect – you are tired next day. In this story, the effect is that Anansi burned his head. Ask: what is the cause? (Hot beans in his hat) • Reading: Ask pupils make predictions . Ask them to look at the illustrations and tell you what they think the story is about. Write the pupils’ predictions on the board. After reading ask if they were correct.
