Anansi said, “You must wash your hands.” Wash is a root word .
We can add ‘ed’ or ‘ing’ to a root word to make new words: Old Turtle wash ed his hands. I am wash ing my hands.
1 Make new words by adding ‘ed’ to these root words. Example: splash + ed â splashed

• Point out that we add letter(s) to the end of a root word to change its meaning or to show number. These added letters are called inflected endings . • Remind pupils that ‘ing’ tells us that something is happening now; ‘ed’ tells us that something happened in the past.
