4 Choose one of your new words and use it in a sentence. Writing 1 Work as a class. Make up your own Anansi story, called ‘Anansi and the Fish’. Use a chart like this to make a story plan:
Anansi and the Fish
Title
Anansi and Fish
Characters
Setting Beginning Middle End 2 Now use the story plan to help you tell your story.
• Writing: Draw the chart on the board and plan the story together. Brainstorm ideas with the class. With pupils’ help, select the best ideas for the story plan. Question 2: ask pupils to contribute to telling the story, encouraging them to add details. • You can go on to write a class story on the board or a flipchart. Shared Writing enables you to make the writing process visible. Using the pupils’ ideas and contributions, model the process by ‘thinking aloud’ as you write. ICT Extension: show pupils a YouTube video of an Anansi story. Pause the video regularly to ask them to summarise what has happened. • For a story plan chart, see Workbook 1 page 130. Suggest pupils make up their own stories based on books they have read.
