• Exercise 2: Encourage pupils to brainstorm their own words and phrases. If they use the words provided, encourage them to make them into phrases, such as “purrs and stretches” or “hisses and shows his teeth”. • Use an illustration from a reading selection as the basis for writing a short, focused paragraph on a regular basis. Encourage pupils to brainstorm ideas with a partner. • Invite pupils to write poems in their journals about topics of personal interest.
