Language: ‘was’ and ‘were’
For things that happened in the past: • Use ‘ was’ for one person, place or thing. Ellie was excited.
1 Finish this story about what happened yesterday. Use was in each sentence.
Example: Yesterday, I was happy.
Yesterday, I ________ not well. My Mom ________ at work so I _________ at my Auntie’s house. My Auntie _______ very kind to me and my Uncle __________ kind too.
For things that happened in the past: • Use were for more than one. Ellie and Don were friends.

Use were after you . You were at the party.
• Extension: Write a phrase on the board, such as ‘at home’ or an adjective, such as ‘busy’. Select a pupil and give him/her a subject (e.g. We, I, My friends ). Ask the pupil to make a sentence using ‘was’ or ‘were’ (e.g. My friends were busy ). Give the next pupil a different subject with which to make a sentence.
