Pause and ask pupils to retell you the story so far. The ant ‘scuttled away’. Ask pupils how they think the ant moved. A few days later, a hunter with a big net came to the river bank. He crept up to the tree where the dove was dozing on a branch. He raised his net and was about to catch the dove when the ant saw him. The ant raced through the grass and stung the hunter’s foot. “Ow!” yelled the man hopping about in pain. The ant stung him again. “Ow! yelled the hunter again; and this time he ran away, back to the road. The dove was safe. “Thank you for saving my life!” she said to the ant as she flew to a higher branch. Talk about cause and effect. The dove dropped a leaf into the river. What was the effect? The man hopped about in pain. What was the cause?
Mummy : Now melt the chocolate in the microwave…
Evan : ...and dip the lollies into the chocolate. Look how the chocolate goes hard as soon as it touches the frozen yoghurt. Mummy : There! Two beautiful, chocolate banana ice lollies! Call your sister and you can have one each. What have I learnt? (Units 7–9) page 64 Remind pupils of the two stories from unit 7 before reading what another pupil said about them. Mia’s class read the story called The Dog and the Bone and they listened to a story called The Ant and the Dove . The teacher asked Mia which story she liked best and why. This is what she said. I liked the Ant and the Dove best because it had more characters. There were two good characters – the ant and the dove – and one bad character – the hunter. The best part was when the ant bit the hunter. I like stories which have a lesson. The lesson of The Dog and the Bone was “Don’t be greedy”. The lesson of The Ant and the Dove was “Help other people and they will help you.” Unit 10 Listen up! page 65 Read the announcement as if it were a loudspeaker announcement on sports day.
