2 Choose the right word.

• Explain that the rule is: add ‘ es ’ to words that end in ‘s’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’ or ‘x’. • Write brush, brushes and bus, buses on the board. Ask pupils to read the words aloud, clapping the syllables. What do they notice? ( singular – one clap; plural – two claps ). Do the same with boy, boys, sweet, sweets ( no extra clap ). Help them to see that the extra clap means the word ends in ‘es’.
