Language: ‘am’, ‘is’ and ‘are’

We use is when we are talking about one thing or person: One puppy is black . We use am after ‘I’: I am sad .

1 Complete these sentences with is or am . Example: I ___ hungry. â I am hungry. 1 I ______ tired. 2 Daddy_____ at home. 3 My friend ____ a good singer. 4 I _____ six. We use are for more than one thing or person: The puppies are brown . We use are after you : You are my friend .

2 Complete these sentences with is or are .

• Ask pupils to make up two sentences about themselves. E.g. I am hungry. Ask them to make up two sentences about a friend. E.g. She is tall. • Help pupils understand that we use are with ‘The puppies’ and also with ‘They’.
