This piece of writing is from a story book. It tells us about animals that are not real. It is fiction. Fiction is not true.
No Food One day, Mrs. Agouti was hungry. Her children were hungry too. Mr. Agouti came home. Mrs. Agouti said, “There isn’t any food.” Mr. Agouti gave her two small berries. “That’s no good,” said Mrs. Agouti.
“You look after the children. I will go and look for food.”
• Ask pupils to compare the illustration on this page with the one opposite. Explain that information often has photographs, while the pictures in stories are usually painted. Why do pupils think that might be? ( Story book characters aren’t real so you can’t photograph them. ) • Point out the words ‘One day’ . Look at how other stories begin. Help pupils to see that there are common story openings, e.g. ‘A long time ago…’ and ‘Once upon a time...’ • Ask pupils to find these high frequency words on this page: there one you was • Write them on flash cards and practise them at other times during the day. 1 Who was hungry? 2 What did Mr. Agouti give Mrs. Agouti? 3 Can real agoutis talk? 4 Do real agoutis wear clothes? 5 Are these characters real or not real? How do you know?
