WOMEN’S RING RATINGS ANALYSIS Through fights of April 8, 2025
1 position on our list. At 42, the end of the line should be close for Hughes (No. 3 last month), but the panel decided that dropping her to No. 5 was punishment enough for her loss, and thus she stays rated to fight another day. FLYWEIGHT: Valle took a brave step in going up two divisions, from 105 pounds, to face Esparza. Too bad Esparza had the same idea. The notoriously undisciplined U.S. Olympian missed weight (by 1.5 pounds) for the third straight time in flyweight bouts, which meant that No. 2-rated Esparza, who lost in a spirited effort to Valle in this non-title bout, was finally dropped from our ratings. With Mexican legend Ibeth Zamora (No. 5) dismissed for inactivity at the weight, two new spots opened up. Mexico’s Marilyn Badillo Amaya took No. 4, and Polish/British contender Jasmina Zapotoczna broke in at No. 5. STRAWWEIGHT: Terrific fight, disappointing result: The Sol Cudos-Sol Baumstarh fight for neighborhood bragging rights was the all-Argentine grudge match that everyone expected, but the feeling was that Baumstarh had outshone Cudos with a superbly aggressive performance that included a clean knockdown – and yet Cudos took home the vacant IBF strap via split decision. One judge scored it in line with most observers (96-93 for Baumstarh), another went narrowly with Cudos (95-94) and the third appeared to be watching an entirely different fight (96-93 for Cudos). Still, kudos to Cudos, of course, but neither of these fine athletes were moved from their respective positions (No. 4 for Cudos, No. 5 for Baumstarh). A rematch – hopefully with better judges at ringside – could affect things differently. ATOMWEIGHT: Germany’s Rupprecht, our inaugural Ring atomweight champion, has at this point almost swept the entire division and appears to have found her absolute prime as a fighter. Her close win over Yamanaka proved it and catapulted Rupprecht into the pound-for-pound Top 10. Yamanaka remained rated at No. 1 after a fight that made the case for a fan-friendly rematch.
one spot. With Caroline Dubois also breaking in at No. 10, someone had to go – and it was Mayer. True, a number of panelists indicated that Mayer had enough merits to remain rated, but since she had
win over No. 1-rated Skye Nicolson, who dropped to No. 2. The mild upset was a beautiful scrap and a tough break for Karriss Artingstall, who lasted only one week in the No. 5 position that she earned after beating Raven Chapman.

after beating South Korea’s Bo Mi Re Shin in a title bout, will surely be back. Germany’s “Tiny” Tina Rupprecht then took the No. 10 position after defending her inaugural Ring atomweight belt and becoming the undisputed 102-pound champion with a majority decision over Japan’s Sumire Yamanaka. WELTERWEIGHT: It was not as controversial as the first fight, but the Mayer-Ryan rematch had all the markings of a classic that clamors to become a trilogy. There was a wide disparity in scorecards across press row, with some people giving Mayer almost every round and others seeing a narrower path of victory for her, but it was widely seen as a win in any case. She can’t go any higher than No. 1, and Ryan is still head and shoulders above the rest of the pack, so right now all that remains to be seen is whether Price will meet Mayer for a U.K. vs. U.S. mega-clash with all the marbles at stake. FEATHERWEIGHT: A grudge match that delivered, for once: Despite her glossy record, Tiara Brown had been largely ignored by the panel due to her inconsistency in activity, poor choice of opponents and weight changes. But she punched all the way to the top of the division with a majority decision
