The Morpheus Series” has been described by U.S. critics as “a series of marvelous thrillers that are skillfully plotted and hard to put down. The three books comprise a paranormal epic, a Star Wars-like odyssey in which the action takes place not in space but in the unpredictable and often terri- fying world of nightmares.” The premise for Volk’s novels, which represent more than 38 years and 1,500 pages of work, was built on two questions: What if the tragic Viet- nam War was actually triggered by an eternal curse that returns periodi- cally to torment human beings with its destructive cruelty? And what if the curse of Morpheus, the ancient Greek god of dreams, gave its victims the power to invade the nightmares of terrified sleepers while sowing death and destruction via the power of “somnambulistic telepathy”? In a review of the first book, The Morpheus Conspiracy , Maine Sunday Telegram critic Steven Steinbock said it was “a web of conspiracy wound around four good people fighting for their lives and their sanity.” Book reviewer Bill McCloud, writing in the Vietnam Veteran magazine, described the second book in the series, The Surgeon’s Curse , as “a para- normal thriller, part horror, part police procedural, with the power to scare the hell out of you.” The third and final volume of the trilogy, Destiny Returns , was recent- ly released by Danjon Publishing and shifts the paranormal action from Boston to Chicago, where a criminally insane politician has been infected with the curse and sets off on a killing spree that will target the professor’s daughter Charly, who has just signed on as a Windy City police detective. One of the most interesting things about Volk’s approach to novel writ- ing is the way he uses the tools of business to build his thrillers from the ground up. After assembling a team of specialists with firsthand knowl- edge of sleep science, crime scene forensics, psychiatry and law enforce- ment homicide investigation techniques, he taps into the team’s expertise throughout the writing and editing process in each of his books. “I believe the ‘team approach’ to my novels is one of the main rea- sons they’ve been praised for their credibility and convincingly realistic
