1 Read the recipe on pages 99–100. Find six command verbs.
2 Read the sentences below. Find and copy those that are instructions. Underline the command verb in each one. 1 Put the empty can in the trash. 2 Do you like rice and peas?
3 Keep the kitchen tidy. 4 Where are the raisins? 5 Wash your hands before cooking.
6 Weigh everything carefully. 7 Boys and girls like cooking. 8 Use fresh ingredients.
To make the negative of an imperative , use don’t or do not . Don’t forget to wash your hands before you cook.

Rewrite these instructions in the negative form.
Example: Break the eggs. è Do not break the eggs. 1 Eat all of the cake. 2 Give Mia a big bowl of soup. 3 Touch the hot pan. 4 Put the glass on the edge of the table. 5 Play with matches. 6 Run with that sharp knife.
• Extension: Give clear instructions, to the class or a group, on how to carry out a task. After allowing time to complete it, check for accuracy.
