Letters: friendly and formal
A friendly letter is written to someone you know well, such as a friend or a family member. A formal letter is usually written to someone you do not know well. Look at the differences between a friendly letter and a formal letter.

• Finding the main idea is a valuable comprehension strategy . When reading, stop regularly and ask students to summarise what they have read or state the main idea of a paragraph. • Letters: Ask why you might write a friendly letter ( to share news, to thank someone, to invite them to a party, to wish them well ) or a formal letter ( to ask for information, to order something, to complain, to express your views on a subject, to persuade someone ).
