Unit 13
Writing
Your parish council is thinking of building a sports club for young people. You are going to write a letter to the local newspaper, telling the readers what you and your friends would like to have in the sports club and why.
1 Discuss these questions and make notes of your ideas. 1 What sports areas would you like at the new sports club? 2 What else would you like to have in the park? 3 Who do you think would go to the park? 4 Why would it be good for the town you live in?
Lots of people want to play baseball.
The town needs an athletics track.
There should be a café.
WB 4 p157
2 Use your notes to write a letter to the newspaper. 1 Say why you are writing the letter. 2 State what you would like to see in the new sports club. 3 State why you think it would be good for you and your friends and why it would be good for the town. 4 End the letter politely.
• Help students to see that audience and purpose affect what they write and how they write it. So, for example, a letter to a newspaper is different from a letter to a friend. They may find it helpful to use one of the pre-writing graphic organisers on page 159. • With students, study the structure and language of the formal letter in ‘Sample Compositions’ on page 168. • Portfolio: Include formal and informal letters in students’ portfolios. Include examples of the writing process as well as finished work.
