Speaking and listening Read the poem, Adventures of Isabel, aloud with a partner.
Make it sound interesting. Practise reading each line. 1 Try making lines 3 and 4 sound scary. 2 Think how the bear will say, “glad to meet you.” What expression will he have on his face? 3 How will he say, “Now I’ll eat you!” 4 Try reading the last verse very slowly. 5 Decide who will read each line and then perform it to another pair.
Language Quotation marks
The words people say are written inside quotation marks . Quotation marks come before the first word spoken. “ Arrest that dog!,” demanded the vendor. Quotation marks come after the last word spoken and after the punctuation mark. The bear said, “Isobel, glad to meet you . ”
DA Speaking and listening: Encourage students to practise reading the poem several times. How will they say the words – fast or slowly? loudly or quietly? Tell students they can make their performance interesting if they vary the way they say a line according to its mood or tone (happy / sad / scary / funny / angry etc).
