1 Read this story and write out the words the characters say like this. LION – I’m going to eat you. ISABEL – Next day, Isobel met a lion. The lion roared, “I’m going to eat you.” Isobel replied, “No.”
“What do you mean?” asked the lion. “I’m not scared of you,” said Isobel.
The lion looked shocked. “Why not?” he asked. Isobel was calm. “Yesterday, I ate a bear and today I will eat you,” she said. And she did.

Write these sentences out, putting in the quotation marks. 1 Arrest that dog! said the vendor. 2 I can’t arrest a dog, said the policeman. 3 Then he asked, Is it your dog? 4 No, said the vendor. 5 I said, we can help pick up the fruit. 6 Thank you, he said. 7 Mom asked, Where is the dog? 8 He ran away, I said.

Punctuating speech
When the spoken words come first, put a comma after the last word spoken inside the quotation marks . “You can’t eat me , ” roared the lion. When the spoken words come last, put a comma before the first quotation marks. The lion roared , “You can’t eat me.” The speaker’s first word begins with a capital letter. Punctuation marks go before the last set of speech marks. (!”) or (?”)
• Practise using quotation marks with the class. Write direct speech on the board and invite individual students to put in the quotation marks. • Tell students to start a new line in their writing every time a different person speaks.
