Unit 16
Scene 2: At home, Joel confides in his mother. JOEL: Shawn’s changed. He doesn’t want to play. He rushes home after school. Perhaps he doesn’t like me any more.
JOEL’S MOTHER: Does he have a problem? JOEL: If he has, he doesn’t want to tell me.
JOEL’S MOTHER: I’ll go and see Shawn’s mother tomorrow. Scene 3: Next day, Joel’s mother meets him after school. JOEL’S MOTHER: Hi, Joel. We’re going to Shawn’s house. JOEL ( surprised ): Why?
JOEL’S MOTHER: I saw Shawn’s mother this morning. She’s very sick and Shawn is looking after her. That’s why he rushes home and has no time to do his homework.

Scene 4: Joel and his mother arrive at Shawn’s house. SHAWN’S MOTHER ( weakly ): Hello. Thank you for coming. JOEL’S MOTHER: I have some chicken stew in this pot. The boys can go and play while I cook some rice and talk with you. SHAWN’S MOTHER ( more weakly ): Thank you. It will be nice for Shawn to play. He usually has to cook and look after me.
( The boys rush out with a football .) JOEL: Why didn’t you tell me your mother was ill? SHAWN: I thought you wouldn’t want to be my friend any more because I don’t have time to play. JOEL ( kindly ): Of course I’ll be your friend.
