WB 4 p149
1
Plan your story. Make notes on a graphic organiser (see pages 10 and 160). 1 Characters: Who are the friends in your story? 2 Setting: When and where does the story take place? 3 Beginning: How does the story start? 4 Middle: What is the problem and what happens? 5 End: How is the problem sorted out?
T ype your story. Move paragraphs around. Read it again. Does it sound better or worse? Email your story to another student to read.
2
Write the first draft of your story. • Include some conversation. • Remember to use quotation marks. • Describe your characters.
3
• Getting ideas: With the whole class, brainstorm ideas for possible settings and story lines before students begin work on their story plans. • Study the structure of a story in ‘Sample Compositions’ on page 166. • Drafting: Encourage students to write an opening sentence that grabs the reader’s attention. Look at the opening sentences of several stories to see how other writers do it. Revise your story. 1 Give your story to another student to read. Read the story he or she gives you. 2 Has your partner told the story clearly? 3 Has your partner used interesting vocabulary? 4 Tell your partner what you like about the story and suggest one thing that could be improved. 5 Make changes to your story. 4 Proofread your story. 1 Have you used correct punctuation, including quotation marks? 2 Have you spelled tricky words correctly? 5 Write a neat copy of your story in your best handwriting.
