Unit 17
Writing: group project
Plan a school fundraising event
1
What is the purpose of your fundraising? For example, you might want to buy sports equipment or buy books for the library.
2
What will you do to raise money? Brainstorm ideas.
Let’s make snacks and sell them at break.
We could have a talent competition.
3
Brainstorm the details. • When and where will it take place? • How will it make money? Will people have to pay to come in or will they buy things? • Who is your audience? (parents, students, other people?) • Make a list of tasks that need to be done. • Do you need other people to help you? Who will you ask? 4 Agree which group members will do each of these tasks.
B Design a poster
A Write about your plans
C List tasks to be done
D Give a short presentation
5
Now prepare your section of the project. A Write two or three paragraphs about your plans. • Explain the audience and purpose of your event. • What graphics can you include to support it? • Share your ideas with the rest of your group. • Revise your contribution and make a neat copy.
• Group work: Ask students if they think each group needs a leader to make sure everyone gets a chance to speak and to guide decision-making. DA Put students in mixed-ability groups or work alongside one group. Students can contribute to the project according to their different skills and abilities, e.g. computer or design skills.
