Passengers booked on the 11.45 flight to Grenada, please note that this flight has been cancelled. Please go to the information desk to be transferred to another flight. Unit 12 Listen up! (page 99) Tell students that they will hear the soundtrack from an online video. It gives instructions for making a fizzy drink. Hi there. Today I’m going to tell you how to make a fizzy drink in 30 seconds. Here’s what you need: a lemon, some sugar,

Unit 7 Listen up! (page 59) Tell students that you are going to read them an entry from the journal of a student called Ajay. On Saturday, I went to the library with Daddy. He was looking for a book about growing vegetables and I was looking for books about transport for my school project. I quickly found a good book about planes and another about cars. Then I went to look at the fiction. I love science fiction and I found a book of stories about aliens. I took it home as well as the two transport books and, that night, I read all of the alien stories. By the time I grow up I think we will all be able to travel to outer space. So maybe I will meet a real alien! Unit 9 Assessment (page 82) Tell students they will hear part of a presentation from a visitor to a grade 4 classroom. If necessary, explain that a presentation is a talk given to an audience on a topic of interest. The purpose of a presentation can be to inform or to persuade. Good morning students, I’ve come from the fire station today to talk to you about two things: the work of a firefighter and what you can do to keep yourself safe. Firefighters don’t only fight fires. We help wherever there are risks to people and/ or property, for example, at accidents such as car crashes or chemical spills; we also assist at floods and other natural disasters. Another important job we do is to help prevent fires and save lives by educating people – and that’s why I’m here today. I’m going to talk to you about how to prevent fire; how to detect fire and how to escape fire. Did you know that three of the main causes of fire in the home are cooking, smoking and faulty electrical equipment? How do you think you can prevent these being a cause of fire in your home? Have students answer the questions on page 82. Then, as a class, discuss the firefighter’s last question. Unit 10 Listen up! (page 83) Tell students they will hear a public announcement. Read it once and ask them to answer questions 1–3. Re-read the announcement before they answer the other questions. May I have your attention please. This is the final call for passengers travelling to Antigua on the flight leaving at 10.20. Please would you go to gate 6. Passengers for Barbados on the flight leaving at 11.05, please note that this flight will be delayed. It will now leave at 12.15. Please wait in the lounge and listen for further announcements.

baking soda and water. And here’s what to do.

Put a teaspoon of baking soda into the glass. Add a teaspoon of sugar and squeeze half a lemon into it. It will start to bubble. Finally, add water to fill the

glass and more bubbles will appear. Now you have a delicious fizzy drink.

This is also a science experiment and you may like to explain the science behind it. The sodium bicarbonate in the baking soda reacts with the acid in the lemon juice to form bubbles of a gas called carbon dioxide. This is the same gas you find in commercial fizzy drinks. Unit 12 Speaking and listening (page 101) Tell students to look at the map and to put their finger on Nathan’s house. They should follow your instructions on the map and say where Nathan goes to. Go out of the house and turn right. Turn left at the bank. Go straight ahead past the library. Cross Dale Street and it is on your right. (answer: the supermarket) Use the map to practise more direction-giving, e.g. from the church to the park. Unit 12 Assessment (page 106) Tell students that they will hear a talk given to a group of students when they arrive for a day at the water park. Then read it again, telling them to listen out for rules regarding what visitors should or should not do. They can make notes during the second reading. Welcome to the High View Water Park. We know you are going to have a fantastic time here but before we go any further I’d like to remind you of a few do’s and don’ts . Smoking isn’t permitted anywhere in the park and glass bottles aren’t allowed in the pool area. We
