Listening Texts

don’t mind you having a picnic but please be sure to take all your litter home with you. If you want to listen to music please do so using headphones as loud music will disturb our other guests. Unit 13 Speaking and listening (page 109) This listening text provides context for the Speaking and listening activity. Tell students that they are going to listen to a radio vox pop. You may wish to read the ‘voices’ in Creole. Near to the centre of a town there is a piece of empty land that is used as a car park and a dump The parish council wants to make it into either a park or a shopping centre. We asked people which plan they preferred. Voice 1: Definitely build shops! Everyone needs to buy things. We’ve got shops but we need more choice. And people enjoy shopping. We don’t need a park. We’re only a 15-minute drive from the beach. People can go there to walk and play. Voice 2: We must have a park. People need a quiet place to walk and play. I see too many children playing in the street. Because of the traffic it’s dangerous and polluted. There should be a quiet safe place in town where families can have picnics and play games. Not everyone has a car to go to the beach. We’ve got enough shops. Unit 15 Listen up! (page 123) Tell students that you are going to read what Saski wrote, in her journal, about an event that happened in the market. Read it through once then read it again as far as ‘the whole stall collapsed’. Ask questions 1 and 2. Read the rest of the text and ask questions 3 and 4 on page 123. I was with Mommy at the market when there was a huge commotion. A dog had found a half-eaten bun under a fruit stall. The vendor shouted at the dog and it tried to run away – but it couldn’t get out. It crashed into the legs of the stall so the whole stall collapsed. Tomatoes, peppers and bananas fell to the ground and were trampled under people’s feet. A little boy slipped on a squashed banana and fell over. His Daddy yelled at the vendor. The vendor screamed at the dog. The dog started barking and, finally, a police officer arrived. “Arrest that dog!” demanded the vendor.

Unit 16 Assessment (page 138) Tell students you are going to read a character description. Everyone liked Sonny. He always had a big smile on his face and he was always ready to help if someone had a problem. Sonny was as tall as a lamppost and he was supreme in games of basketball. On top of all that, Sonny played the guitar in a band. Unit 18 Listen up! (page 148) Tell students they are going to hear the instructions Lydia’s teacher gave the class the day before they visited the Sugar Museum in Barbados. Remember, you must be here by 7.45 tomorrow morning as the bus will leave at 8. We plan to return to school by 3 o’clock in the afternoon. I want everyone to bring a notebook and pencil and also a few coloured pens or pencils. You should also bring your lunch. You don’t need money but you might like to bring a little money in case you want to get a snack or a post card. As always, at this time of year, it might rain so you might want to bring along a rain jacket or an umbrella. Remember also that you are representing the school when you are on a school trip so make sure your uniform is clean and tidy. I expect you all to stay with the group at all times and no shouting or running about in the museum. If you have any litter from your lunch please put it in a bin or take it home with you. It’s going to be a fascinating visit and I hope you are all looking forward to it. Assessment (page 155) Tell students you are going to read a report written by a student called Kasron. On Wednesday my class went to visit a farm park. It took us about an hour to get there. The first thing we did was to all take a walk around the farm with the farmer. There were cows, pigs, goats and hens. It was much noisier than I expected. Then we split into three groups and each did something different. My group visited the goats before lunch and we helped to feed them. We ate our lunch in the shade of some mango trees. Then my group had a ride on a trailer pulled by a tractor. The trailer nearly turned over in a ditch! That was the best part for me! I was very tired when we got back but I learnt a lot about looking after animals.
