Characters and setting

Andrew and I always walk to school together. One morning, I knocked on his door and a dog barked. Andrew opened the door and a brown spotted dog bounded out. “This is Lotto, my uncle’s dog,” Andrew said. “We are looking after him this week.” I patted Lotto. Andrew went back into the house and, after a few minutes, came out looking cross. “I can’t find my P.E. kit,” he said. “It is in a green bag.”

Beginning

Problem

We had to go to school without the P.E. kit because we did not want to be late. Andrew pulled the front door but it did not close properly. We walked to school, talking all the way. We went into the school yard, still talking. Then we saw our friends. They all laughed and pointed but we didn’t know why. Then we looked behind us. There was Lotto. In his mouth, was Andrew’s green bag with his P.E. kit! “Thank you, Lotto!” said Andrew. “You are a good boy.” Then Andrew told Mr. Drake who laughed. “Take Lotto home,” he said. “And, this time, be sure to shut the door properly.”

• Help students to see how the writer manages to set the scene and also tell us about the characters in paragraph 1. Paragraph 3 tells us what the problem is and paragraph 4 drops a hint about the solution ( the door isn’t quite closed ). • Sometimes writers don’t choose a title until they have finished the story. Ask students to suggest a title for this story.
