Purpose for writing

I am writing from Hope Road Primary School to invite you to support our school Book Day. Book Day will take place at the school on November 5th, between 10 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. There will be a variety of events going on all day. Class 1 will be performing a play, based on an Anansi story. Class 3 will be reading extracts from books and the younger students will be dressing up as their favourite characters. My class has organised a competition to design book covers and we would like you to judge the competition. We would also like you to bring a display of books for sale. Please let us know if you will be able to come along. Yours sincerely, Dominique Barker

Body of the letter

Closing and signature

• Ask students to tell you how this letter is different from the informal letter on page 167. ( It has the address of the recipient on the left; the closing is formal; the writer signs her full name; the letter is not chatty – Dominique doesn’t say anything about herself or ask any personal questions. ) • Point out that the first paragraph states why Dominique is writing. Then she provides all the necessary information.
