Language Tree SB 4

Unit 3

The forest was filled with the most terrible noise. Elephant and Hippo were both amazed that Anansi was so strong. Hippo tugged and Elephant pulled. Hippo pulled and Elephant tugged. The struggle went on all day. By sunset, both animals were exhausted and they collapsed on the ground. At last the forest was quiet again. Anansi jumped on Elephant’s trunk. “Who is stronger? You or me?” he demanded. “You are,” whimpered Elephant. Then Anansi jumped on Hippo’s nose. “Who is stronger? You or me?” he demanded. “You are, Anansi,” whimpered Hippo. Anansi laughed and laughed. That night, he was happy because he had taught the two giant animals a lesson.

Cause and effect

• Question 5: Encourage students to recognise cause and effect in what they read. It is a useful comprehension strategy. Invite them to copy and complete a Cause and Effect map (page 160) for this or another story they have read. • Help students to see that using onomatopoeic words will make their writing more interesting. • Extension: Ask students what the moral/lesson of the story is. (Cunning and intelligence can be more powerful than size and physical strength.) ICT Extension: Show an animated video of another Anansi story from YouTube. Pause every so often to ask students to recap the story so far. Invite them to compare it with this story.
