1 Find six adjectives in the story. Use each one in a sentence of your own.

2 Which of these adjectives could you use to describe Anansi?

3 Which of these adjectives could you use to describe the feelings of Hippo and Elephant at the end of the story?

miserable

delighted

unhappy

defeated

depressed

victorious

4 Choose four things in your classroom and write a sentence describing each of them. Use at least two adjectives in each sentence. Underline each adjective. Example: The shiny pen is on the long table.

•  Speaking and listening: Encourage students to talk every day about what they read. Practise daily reading routines in which students talk in pairs and also write about their reading. • Practise adjectives by giving the class a simple sentence, such as, “The cat sat on the mat” or “The house was by the beach”. Ask students to insert adjectives, for example The furry cat sat on the mat. The cat sat on the bright orange mat. Encourage them to come up with as many variations as possible. Then repeat with a different sentence. • A wider range of parts of speech are looked at on page 135.
