The little boy lay down under the enormous tree. He was cool and comfortable on his mat. His mother told him a long story about an old owl and a cross parrot. The small boy was tired and soon he went to sleep. His mother was happy. She listened to the soft sound of the gentle wind in the tree.

6 Rewrite this story, adding at least one adjective in each of the gaps.

The _______ mouse and the _______ rabbit lived in the _______ forest. They were _______ friends. One day a _______ lion saw them. The lion gave a _______ roar. The _______ rabbit dived into a _______ hole but the _______ mouse laughed. The _______ lion was so _______ that he ran away.

Comparing adjectives

When we compare two things, we add ‘er’ to the adjective. Anansi is small er than Hippo. When we compare more than two things, we add ‘est’ to the adjective. Mouse is the small est animal in the forest. Positive Comparative Superlative small smaller smallest big bigger biggest

Monkey is big.

Hippo is bigger.

Elephant is the biggest.

DA Exercise 5: Tell students to find fewer adjectives according to ability. • Explain that most adjectives have three forms: positive is the root word; comparative is used to compare two things; superlative is used to compare one thing with every other member of a group.
