4 Write two questions you would like to ask about forest fires.

Subject and predicate

Every sentence has a subject and a predicate. The subject is the person or thing which does the action. The predicate is what we say about the subject (it contains the verb). Lots of animals need forests for shade.

• Exercise 2: The passage ends with a ! because the last sentence is surprising . • Exercise 4: When students have generated their questions, discuss where they might find the answers to their questions (library, internet, adults, encyclopaedia, etc.). Finding the answers could be set as a homework assignment. Students may have access to the internet at home or in the library.
