6 Divide these sentences into subject and predicate.
Example: Landowners / sometimes set fire to trees. 1 A forest fire moves at up to 20 kilometres an hour. 2 Fires move faster when they are going uphill. 3 A furious fire can leap over a road or a river. 4 Lightning sometimes causes forest fires. 5 Firefighters often remove trees to stop the fire. 6 Aeroplanes and helicopters drop water on the fire from above.

Some words are made up of different parts. Careless visitors drop cigarettes.

Care is a root word ; less is a suffix . A suffix is one or more letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

• Word work: Help students to see how the ending changes the part of speech, so that a noun ( care ) becomes an adjective ( careless ) or a verb ( cared ). DA Ask selected students to change these nouns to adjectives by adding a suffix to each: use, pain, danger, noise, fun.
