Here is a summary of paragraph 1. People such as landowners, loggers and hunters start fires deliberately.

2 Write a summary of paragraphs 2 and 3, using some of your own words.

2 Read the passage below. Then read it again noting the main ideas. Write a summary. There are four main parts of a rainforest

The top layer is the emergent layer. It is very sunny and only the tallest trees reach this high. Next is the canopy layer . Most trees in the forest grow to this height. Their thick leaves stop most of the light from getting any lower. The understorey layer does not get much light but many vines and plants grow here. On the bottom is the forest floor which is dark and damp. It is covered with dead leaves, twigs and dead plants.

• Summarising demonstrates students' comprehension. Students also reinforce learning by picking out the main ideas. Encourage students to write summaries in their journals of stories they have read or heard. • At the end of a unit, invite students to reflect in their journal: What I found most interesting was…/A question I still have is…/What I found out that I did not know before is… • Remember to collect samples of each student’s work in a portfolio as a record of their achievements and progress.
