Early Morning – Eighty Years Ago Eighty years ago, Pablo and Tomas were young boys in Belize. Their lives were very different from ours today. Most mornings they consumed Johnny cakes and fried beans for breakfast. Sometimes they ate fried manatee . Before they went to school, they had to do chores. Pablo began by drawing water from the well for the day’s washing, cleaning and cooking. Tomas’ job was to grind corn using a hand-grinding machine. He turned the handle for 20 minutes so that his mother would have flour to make tortillas for lunch.

This may be in the field of technology or ways in which your town or village has changed. Ask students to also ask their parents or grandparents what was different when they were children and to report back to the class.
