Most of the verbs in the passage are in the simple past tense . They tell us about actions that were completed in the past. To form regular simple past tense verbs, add ‘d’ or ‘ed’ to the root. He scaled and cleaned the snappers. Many verbs are irregular in the simple past tense. You have to learn these verbs, for example eat/ate. They ate manatee for breakfast.
