Unit 5
5 Use the simple past tense to write in your journal. Begin like this: 1 When I was a baby I… 2 In the school holidays I…
3 Yesterday morning I… 4 Yesterday afternoon I… 5 Last night I…
Negative past tense
In the past tense, verbs form the negative by using did not and the root of the verb. Mommy had a television. Grandma did not have a television.
6 Rewrite these as positive (not negative) sentences. Example: We did not go to the cinema. è We went to the cinema. 1 Everybody did not go to school. 2 People did not eat the food from the local farm.
3 Grandad did not play a guitar. 4 Grandma did not write letters. 5 She did not make her own clothes. 6 She did not walk everywhere. 7 They did not grow their own food. 8 Grandma did not keep bees.
7
Rewrite these sentences in the negative form.
Example: He drove a car. è He did not drive a car. 1 Grandad had a computer. 2 Most people owned a car. 3 People wrote emails. 4 Grandma watched television. 5 As children, my parents had cell phones.
6 Grandma knew about video games. 7 My grandparents went to bed late. 8 She did her shopping online.
• Demonstrate on the board how to change a positive past tense statement into a negative one. Begin with a sentence such as ‘I walked’ which doesn’t have an object. Ask students what is the root of the verb ( walk ) and show where to position ‘did not’. • Practise regular past tenses and then move on to irregular verbs ( My friend ran. We went .) and sentences with objects ( I passed the church. ) before students do Exercises 6 and 7 independently.
