Past tense questions

In the past tense, we form questions by using did and the root of the verb. The children patted the dog. è Did the children pat the dog? Mommy had a computer. è Did Mommy have a computer?

Make questions from these statements.

Example: The boys got water. è Did the boys get water? 1 Cedric cleaned the fish before school. 2 Mommy made tortillas for lunch.

3 Pablo dropped the bucket in the yard. 4 Grandma washed the clothes by hand. 5 People enjoyed life in the past. 6 They fed the hens every morning. 7 They went to other islands by boat. 8 The postman brought the letters. Make up a question in the simple past tense about each of these things. 1 cars 4 football 2 donkeys 5 school 3 radio 6 shopping

Ask your partner two questions about yesterday.

Example: Did you talk to Darren yesterday?

Word work: homographs

Homographs are words that are spelt the same but have different meanings. Pablo began by drawing water. He showed Mommy his drawing .

• Tell students a short story in the past tense and then challenge pairs to make up three questions about the story. They can use question words ( who, what, where, when, how ) as sentence starters. DA Vary the partners with whom students work, sometimes pairing students of different abilities. CR Exercise 8: You may want to ask students to say how they would ask these past-tense questions in Creole and compare the two versions.
