Find four similes in this passage.
In St. Vincent, the sea is sometimes like an angry lion. Then you must be careful. The waves can be like monsters that pull you in. On other days the sea is as playful as a puppy. Those are the days I love. We leap the waves like flying fish.
4 Complete each of these similes with ideas of your own. Example: The water was as cold as ice . 1 The butcher’s knife was as sharp as ________. 2 Grandma’s new hat was like ________. 3 My sister sings like ________.
4 My little brother is as slow as ________. 5 The store owner is as old as ________. 6 Happiness is like ________.
Speaking and listening
1 Did you ever change what you planned to do because of the weather? • Why?
• What happened? • How did you feel?
2
Tell your partner about it.
DA Exercise 4: Encourage students to be creative. Students may find it easier to work in pairs or groups. Work alongside one group, gathering ideas on a large sheet of paper. • Suggest that they think of things that make them happy to complete question 6. ( Happiness is like Mom’s chicken stew/a playful puppy. ) • Collect similes on one of the subjects and write them on the board in the form of a list poem. The results can be surprisingly effective.
