The past continuous tense uses ‘was’ or ‘were’ and tells us what was happening in the past. ‘ Anita was running’ tells us what Anita was doing. She had not finished running. I was sheltering. The windows were rattling.

Word work: dictionary skills
When you look for a word in the dictionary, if there are other words beginning with the same letter or letters, look at the next letter to help you find your word. rain comes before roof

• Ask students to work in pairs to write definitions of words from the dictionary skills activity, such as desperate, distant, rumble, burden, heal and then check them in the dictionary. DA Make up another, different group of words which offer other students less challenge; for example, dull, reply and bundle – words which begin with different initial letters. • Look at examples of words in alphabetical order, in a dictionary or an index (see page 37). Discuss why we write words in alphabetical order ( to make them easier to find ).
