Writing: a poem

1 Imagine you are on the beach. The sun is shining but it is very windy. What is happening? Brainstorm ideas using a web like the one below. Use the picture to help you.

What is happening on the beach?

What can you hear?

A windy day on the beach

What is happening in the sea?

2 Use your notes and the writing frame below to write a poem. The verbs should be in the present continuous tense. The last two lines should be a simile.

Type your poem. Change words and move them about. Experiment with different fonts.

____________ is/are ____________ing. ____________ is/are ____________ing. ____________ is/are ____________ing like ____________.

3 Read your poem. Can you use more interesting verbs?

4 Edit your poem. Write your final draft in your neatest handwriting.

• Exercise 1: You may want to demonstrate by creating a class word web on the board. Students might suggest seeing boats, waves, birds, windsurfers, fish in the sea . They might see children, babies, towels, picnics and umbrellas on the beach . Think how these would behave in a strong wind. • Exercise 2: Explain that the ‘writing frame’ provides the outline of their poem and that students should fill in the gaps. Encourage them to search for unusual ways of describing things.
