Alien TV Ajay’s teacher had asked the class to write a composition called “The Strangest Thing I Have Ever Seen”. Ajay sat at the table and stared at his school notebook. “Are you doing your homework?” asked Daddy. “I don’t know what to write,” muttered Ajay. “Well, don’t leave it too late,” said Daddy and he went out into the yard. Ajay crossed the room and turned on the television. He flicked through the channels. Channel 1 – game show, Channel 2 – advertisement, Channel 3 – news, Channel 4 – cricket. Then the television flickered and hopped back to Channel 3. Ajay pressed a button. He wanted to watch the cricket but the television kept jumping between Channels 3 and 4. Suddenly the television hiccupped and a strange creature stared out of the screen.
The creature’s face seemed to be made of green plastic and very odd sounds came from its mouth. It was a series of squeaks, buzzes and hums. The picture changed and more green creatures appeared. Their arms were long and their legs were short. Behind them, Ajay saw a purple sun and blue trees. These creatures seemed to be in a different world.
• Read aloud the extract from Ajay’s journal in Listening Texts page 164. • Familiarise students with the term ‘science fiction’, explaining that it is usually set in the future, involving imagined other worlds and travel through space or time. Discuss what other types of stories they have read ( realistic stories , such as in Unit 1, traditional tales as in Unit 3). Introduce students to other genres such as mystery and adventure stories.
