Being a Vet What is a vet?
A vet is a doctor for animals. It takes about five years to train to be a vet.
Vets learn to treat all animals but often go on to specialise . Some vets work just with small animals or only with horses or wild animals. Food- animal vets only take care of animals we eat, such as cows and sheep. These vets have to make sure that the animals do not get diseases that might make humans ill.
Other vets work with all animals but concentrate on one area. They may work with skin problems or eye problems. They may focus on teeth or animal behaviour. Finally, some vets do research – looking for new ways to treat animal diseases.
