Unit 9

Where do vets work? Most small-animal vets work in local clinics. They treat dogs, cats, rabbits and other pets who are unwell. Large-animal vets often travel out to see animals in zoos and farms. Vets are ‘on call’ all round the clock. Their patients may need them any time of the day or night. What does a vet in a clinic do?

Heading

A vet does lots of different things. People bring their healthy pets for a vaccination every year to stop them from getting sick. The vet does this by giving an injection. If a pet has had an accident the vet takes x-rays to look inside the animal to see if any bones are broken. Pets have check-ups, just like humans. The vet looks at the animal’s teeth and eyes and listens to its heart, using a stethoscope . The vet weighs the animal to check it is not over-weight or under-weight.

Part of the job is dealing with scared, dangerous or angry animals. The vet has to be careful. Some animals will try to kick, scratch or bite the vet. Vets also have to comfort people whose pet is sick or dying.

This dog has an ear infection. The vet put a plastic collar on him to stop him scratching his ear.
