Language: paragraphs
We use paragraphs to help us organise our writing. A paragraph is a group of sentences on one topic. It is made up of: • a topic sentence which explains what the paragraph is about (the main idea). • sentences which give details about the main idea. When you are writing paragraphs: • Start a new paragraph when you introduce a new idea. • Start each paragraph on a new line. • Indent the first word.
• Remind students about Question-answer relationships (see page 9). • Speaking and listening: Students may want to recap the reading text before they begin. You may ask them to swap roles and repeat the exercise. • Remind students that when they make notes, they don’t need to write complete sentences.
