Word work: prefixes
You can change the meaning of a word by adding a prefix . over -weight under -weight weight
healthy
un -healthy
The prefixes ‘ un ’, ‘dis ’ and ‘ im ’ mean not .
1 Add ‘un’, ‘dis’ or ‘im’ to each of these words to change its meaning. Check the spelling of your new word in a dictionary.

Check your answers in a dictionary.
• Write the words ‘bicycle’, ‘tricycle’ and ‘unicycle’ on the board. Ask students what they mean, then ask them to work out what these prefixes mean: uni- ( one ), bi- ( two ), tri- ( three ). Talk about other words that use these prefixes ( uniform, triangle, tripod, bi-annual ).
