• Explain that audience and purpose dictate how a text is written. Show students different texts (for example, a recipe, a children’s book or television schedule) and ask what the audience and purpose is. How are they different (size of print, size of illustrations, layout and design)? When discussing the audience of the LIAT poster draw students’ attention to the family illustrated and the small print about shopping, sport etc. • Draw attention also to the symbols at the bottom of the page (indicating online sources of information).
