Abbreviations are a short way to write words. • Often we use just the initial letters of a group of words. Mr. stands for Mister • Sometimes we use just the first part of the word, or the first and last letters. Fri = Friday Rd. = Road • People often use initials in place of their names. D. B. = Dan Blake We usually put a full stop after abbreviations.

Use abbreviations to replace the underlined words. 1 Doctor Benson examined the baby. 2 We live in Bridge Avenue. 3 My teacher is called Mister Parker. 4 We put 200 grams of flour in the cake. 5 The bus drove at 80 kilometres per hour. 6 We see lots of tourists from the United States. 7 The island of Saint Vincent is 29 kilometres long. 8 On Sundays I go to Saint Andrew’s Church.

Write your initials and the initials of the person sitting next to you.

Write your address and the address of your school, using as many abbreviations as you can.

Look at the recipe on page 99. Write a list of the abbreviations used in the list of ingredients.
• Point out that the abbreviations in the schedule (am, pm, Mon, Fri, Feb) on page 83 do not use full stops. This is becoming more common but students should do whatever is required by their syllabus. • Introduce students to some abbreviations in the public domain such as O.E.C.S. (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States) and M.P. (Member of Parliament). Abbreviations like LIAT and CARICOM do not usually have full stops.
