Unit 10
Writing: information text
Hill End School has organised a summer club and wants to advertise it to parents and students.
1
Read this information sheet.
Hill End School summer club for children aged 7–12 years will run from June 19th to June 23rd this year. It will be held from 9am to 12pm every day. We will divide the students into groups and each group will do a different activity every day. Examples of activities are: water sports, track sports, choir, art and craft, cookery. The activity leaders all have red cross and lifeguard training. The people organising the summer club are Mr. Davies and Miss Miller. They can be contacted by email: hillend.info@yahoo.com. The children usually have lots of fun but it will have to be carefully planned and widely advertised. We don’t yet know how much it will cost.
2
Design a poster to help Hill End School advertise the club.
3
Plan your poster. • Make notes of the information it should contain. • Plan the layout. • Make the club sound attractive. Think of a snappy phrase.
4 Make a rough draft. Share it with another pair of students. Ask them:
• Is the information in the poster clear? • What do you like about our poster? • What could we improve?
5
Revise your poster and make a neat copy.
• Portfolio: Remember to include a variety of text types in students’ portfolios and to include examples of different stages in the writing process.
